Teaching Tip: How Do You Want to Learn? – March 3, 2008

This quarter was my first quarter teaching at ITT Tech. I think one of the things teachers rarely do is ask their students what they want to learn. Depending on the class size and experience level, a teacher may finish the syllabus early. This extra time before or after the lesson is a great time to teach students something they want to and are not forced to learn.
Some of my multimedia students requested learning Pagemaker, Photoshop, Illustrator and GoLive. Some of my CAD students requested learning more about Photoshop, Office and the application of Autodesk programs in the real world. Though many of these students have already taken classes involving these programs and subjects, they would like to elaborate or learn something further about them.
After passing out a survey the last day of class, I learned my CD340 students appreciated my tutorial approach with learning Autodesk VIZ instead of following the book the whole time, my IT213 class liked learning with the book and also branching off to find online director tutorials, and my CD140 class liked watching movies and listening to music during their drawing assignments. Everyone commented on how these things broke up their 4 ½ hours. I feel this tip breaks down the barrier of a dictator to more of an approachable educator.

As an educationist who is currently focusing on DIY learning, I believe we need a radically different approach to crediting learning that occurs in our daily lives. Informal, low-cost learning can play a huge role in developing human capital, communities, and businesses and I love to connect with those who share my passion.
