6 Months to Spain: Week 19

Thanks so much for joining me for week 19 of my 6 Months to Spain series. I started the Learn in Your Car Spanish Series a few weeks ago. I’m gotten through the rest of disc 2 and some more complex sentences. I also got through two episodes of that BBC Interactive Web course I told you about last week. It is really cool! It’s really well filmed with real Spanish people speaking the language at their normal speed. It’s great to hear the pronunciations at a normal pace. It’s also super engaging- the story line is so strange that it really keeps you on your toes!

Spanish Meals and Customs

In one of the episodes, the main character invites you to ‘la merienda’, or the afternoon snack. It made me wonder how many different eating times Spanish people enjoy. I was excited to find out they are like hobbits! Spanish mealtimes tend to start a few hours after everyone else- I’ll have to remember this so I’m not starving at 5pm!

El Desayuno: Morning breakfast eaten before 10am- usually coffee and a piece of toast with oil and tomato spread.

Cafe: Late breakfast between 10 and 12 and another popular time for coffee: Cafe con Leche (coffee with milk), Cafe Solo (espresso), or Cafe Americano (watered coffee for those that think the coffee is too strong!).Cafe: Late breakfast between 10 and 12 and another popular time for coffee: Cafe con Leche (coffee with milk), Cafe Solo (espresso), or Cafe Americano (watered coffee for those that think the coffee is too strong!).

La Comida: Lunch is served between 2 and 4- also a popular time for the famous siesta when people go home, take a nap, and enjoy some coffee when their establishment closes down.

La Merienda: A late afternoon snack that has to tide you over till you go out for dinner later that night- usually a small sandwich, piece of fruit, or coffee.

La Cena: Dinner typically begins in Spain about 9pm, but people eat as late as midnight during the Summer months! You can barhop your way around the local tapas bars or enjoy a lighter meal like salad or a sandwich.

Have you ever traveled somewhere with different eating habits? What did you eat and at what times did you have to wait to eat at?
